Pole and podiums for David in Spain
Sri Lankan driver stays in Euroformula Open title contention with one round to go
Sri Lankan driver Yevan David took two second-place finishes as well as his second pole position of the season in the penultimate round of the Euroformula Open at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya.
It had been the perfect start to the weekend with David’s second pole position of the season on Saturday.
“It was my second pole position of the season and honestly I was very proud. We knew we had the potential so it was a great start to the weekend. I was super proud of the team after some setbacks in recent rounds.”
Saturday afternoon’s first race of the weekend saw David take his third second-place and eleventh podium finish of the season after finishing less than a second adrift to championship rival Tymek Kucharcyzk.
“I definitely wanted more, but we had good race pace, catching Tymek at the end.”
Sunday morning’s second race of the weekend saw David start from fifth before blasting into contention for the lead at the first corner. He maintained third position until taking second place for his twelfth podium of the year with five laps to go. His second, second-placed finish of the weekend returned David to second in the standings, 32 points adrift of Kucharcyzk.
“A great way to start Sunday: P2 from P5. It was tricky conditions with a drying track on slicks, but I made a really good start, but then it’s a long run down to Turn One. So unfortunately, it was three wide and I ended up P3. After that I had to be patient and P2 was a great result.”
Sunday afternoon’s third and final race started in wet conditions behind the Safety Car. David, like his rivals, started on wet tyres, but an early change to slicks by one competitor highlighted the potential from the drying track. David - who started from sixth - was quick to respond with the Motopark squad swapping to slicks, however the race would be time limited and not run to the full lap distance. Despite being far faster than those ahead on wets, David finished sixth - one position ahead of title leader Kucharcyzk, so narrowing the lead.
“It was a difficult race three to end the weekend with a drying track. We started on wets then pitted for slicks but was a slightly slow stop and we finished sixth at the flag which was was decent. We finished ahead of the championship leader as well, so good points and damage limitation, after a very chaotic race, but one I very much enjoyed.”
One round remains in the season, at Italy’s Monza circuit in a month’s time. There, the final round with the final three races will be played-out. A maximum of 26 points is available in each race and David sits 30 points adrift of the title lead and seven points away from second in the standings.
“Monza is one of a kind. With the low-downforce setup and all the long straights, you can’t pull away there — you’re racing wheel to wheel from lights to flag. It’s going to be tense, especially with the championship still open. Risk evaluation will be absolutely crucial.”
Yevan David’s 2025 Euroformula Open campaign is supported by Merc Stop, Alcom, Dayholi, and the Ceylon Motor Sports Club (CMSC). He is contesting his first full season in the ultra-competitive single-seater championship, which features identical Dallara 324 chassis powered by TOM’S engines. In 2026 he will be the first Sri Lankan to contest the FIA Formula 3 Championship.
